Background

Tony Redmond joined the Commission as Chairman on 12 November 2001. Before becoming a Local Government Ombudsman, Mr Redmond was Chief Executive of the London Borough of Harrow. (1987-2001) Prior to that he served as Treasurer and Deputy Chief Executive of Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council (- 1987) and also Treasurer to the Merseyside Police Authority. He has also held senior posts in Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council and Liverpool City Council. He left school in 1962 and joined Liverpool City Council. His earlier posts were in Accountancy, Audit, Revenues and Corporate Planning at Liverpool City Council culminating in his role as Chief Accountant.

He is currently the Chairman and Chief Executive of the Commission for Local Administration ( England)

Qualifications

Chartered Public Finance Accountant.

Memberships

Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is also a Member of the Queen Mary Westfield College (University of London) Public Policy Advisory Board. Member of the Centre for Public Policy Seminars.

He is allso a non-executive member of the OPHSO Board and a member of the Pay Committee (a formal sub committee of the Board).

Outside interests:

Sport, theatre, music and an abiding passion for ballet.

Comment

It would appear that he has never had a full time job outside of local government.
